Renegade Theatre Company is excited to announce auditions for Our Town by Thorton Wilder, an American classic written in 1938. "Our Town" is a poignant exploration of life, love, and death in the small fictional town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, at the turn of the 20th century. The play is presented in three acts, each capturing different aspects of daily life: the mundane routines of the townspeople, the blossoming romance and marriage of George Gibbs and Emily Webb, and the sobering reflections on mortality and the passage of time. Guided by the omniscient Stage Manager, the audience is invited to witness the beauty in ordinary moments and the universal human experiences that connect us all. "Our Town" serves as a timeless reminder of the preciousness of life and the inevitability of change.

A Glimpse Into Our Interpretation
We’ll be exploring a nuanced interpretation of the romantic leads, George and Emily: they’ll each be played by three different sets of age appropriate pairs for each of the three acts of the show. We will not be making any changes to the text as written. We will instead be shifting the gender presentation of the actors featured in these roles. The first act will feature the young couple gendered as written, with same sex couples replacing them in the second and third acts. The show will start in the first act leaning into traditional gender expressions, then over the course of the play we’ll see all supporting characters shifting into more gender non-conforming presentation. This choice to explicitly shift and highlight the multidimensional nature of the people of Grover’s Corners frees them from the confines of traditional, binary gendered thinking and the heteronormative choices they have been defined by for nearly a century.
CAUSE WE’RE SUPPORTING
As with all of our productions, a portion of proceeds will be donated to a cause we believe in. For this production, we’re raising funds to Lost N Found Youth, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that exists to end homelessness for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) and all sexual minority youth.
