Intro to volunteering with our marine programme through in-water snorkel guide training at AUT Millennium National Aquatic Centre.
About this Event

This event is designed to help train volunteers for the second half of this season. Whether you are new this season or you feel like you need some additional training, all are welcome. Our focus will be on basic snorkel and in-water skills - no experience required. Senior guides from last season are appreciated to help with the pool training.

Minimum age is 10 years old and volunteers under the age of 16 years old need to be accompanied by an adult guardian.

If you haven't registered as a Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust volunteer yet please follow this link.

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust could not carry out our programmes without the help of our snorkel guides; volunteers like you allow us to connect communities with te taiao. Thank you so much for signing up - we look forward to seeing you get ready for this summer!

Schedule:

6:00pm - Arrive at venue (address provided upon registration)

6:15 - 7:00pm - Opening karakia and whakawhanaungatanga and Introduction to Mountains to Sea and our Experiencing Marine Reserves Programme

7:00 - 8:30pm - Pool-based snorkel guide training session

8:30 - 9:15pm - Get dressed, Debrief, Evaluations and Closing Karakia

We will cover the following in the Pool Session and the introduction to Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust session:

  • Theory session which covers our Health and Safety, volunteer roles, and how to give a briefing/karakia
  • Basic snorkel skills
  • How to properly use snorkel equipment and kit up participants
  • Leading a group
  • Rescue scenarios

After the training you will be given your starting role for this season. Please note that we will give you feedback and help you further your skills throughout the season. Whatever role you have initially is just a starting point!

We will provide you with all necessary gear. Just bring togs, a water bottle and enthusiasm!
