Gil Shaham, appearing for the first time in New Zealand, is unquestionably such an artist. Prokofiev saw the heroine of his ballet as more than a fairytale character, calling her 'a real person, feeling, experiencing, and moving among us'. He clothes her in music which, by turns, is sprightly, ebullient, and sweetly full of heartfelt longing.
