Friday 17 April | Free Community Shoot, Join me for our next Free Shot Friday, this time under new moon skies at the stunning North Dandalup Dam — perfect conditions for photographing the Milky Way. This is a relaxed, social shoot designed for photographers of all levels. Come for sunset, stay for astro, or drop in when it suits you — there’s no pressure and no set end time. Meet-up details
Location: North Dandalup Dam
Meet time: 5:30pm
Sunset: 5:53pm
Milky Way rise: 8:53pm
Milky Way set: 5:53am
Moon phase: New Moon
 Sunset → Astro
We’ll start with optional sunset and landscape photography for anyone who arrives early. As the light fades, we’ll move into light painting and night techniques while waiting for the Milky Way to rise. Once the Milky Way is visible, you’re free to shoot, experiment, and stay as long as you feel comfortable — some may stay a few hours, others all night. There’s no official finish time.
 What you can shoot
Golden-hour and sunset landscapes
Blue hour reflections and compositions
Light painting techniques
Milky Way over the dam
Long exposures and night sky landscapes
 What to bring
Camera (DSLR or mirrorless recommended for astro)
Tripod (essential for night shooting)
Wide-angle lens (ideally f/2–f/2.8)
Fully charged batteries (cold drains them fast)
Torch or headlamp (red light if you have one)
Warm clothes and comfortable shoes
 Important notes
This is a free, informal community shoot, not a workshop
You’re responsible for your own safety and gear
Please be respectful of others’ compositions and light use
Light painting will be coordinated so we don’t ruin astro shots
Whether you’re new to astrophotography or just want to shoot under dark skies with like-minded creatives, this is a perfect chance to learn, experiment, and enjoy the night.
Hope to see you under the stars — Claire / Gilham Martin Media
