PLAYGROUNDS FOR ALL - Designing Inclusive Playgrounds that Meet the Needs of an Entire Community

This presentation provides an overview of how to design inclusive playgrounds that support children of all abilities. It introduces five key focus areas, beginning with the essential inclusion of multi‑sensory play.  The presentation also explains how sensory processing differences appear in children, and how thoughtful design can support both.  Beyond sensory needs, the presentation emphasizes offering a wide range of challenge levels so every child can play at an appropriate developmental level. It also outlines accessibility strategies that go beyond ADA minimums and are frequently requested by parents.  Additional guidance covers site features that help children who become overwhelmed. The presentation concludes with the stages of social play and how playgrounds can support each one.

Info: Amber Hildebrand‑Singleton is a Licensed Landscape Architect in California and Colorado with a BS in Landscape Architecture from UC Davis. Born and raised in California, she began her career working at several California LA firms before joining Miracle Playsystems in 2015 as a playground designer for the California territory. In 2022, she helped launch the company’s design and sales efforts in Oregon and Washington, and in 2023 transitioned to the Colorado/Wyoming/Nebraska team following the acquisition of Churchich. Amber is now in a Specification Representative role, partnering closely with LA firms and municipal staff to support their work as a dedicated playground‑industry specialist.
Amber enjoys time with her husband, two kids, and two small dogs. Her children’s passion for acting and set design keeps the family busy, and she loves traveling—whether back home to California or to new or historical places that spark creativity and connection.
