Pangolins and people: conservation and public health lessons from wildlife trade investigation across Africa and Asia
Prof. Timothy Bonebrake, The University of Hong Kong
Abstract: All pangolin species globally are threatened with extinction. In 2020, pangolins also became the center of widespread speculation about wildlife trade origins of the COVID19 pandemic. What is the connection between pangolins and pathogens? Can the trade in pangolins be slowed to facilitate their recovery and conservation? In this talk I’ll demonstrate how investigation of wildlife trafficking pathways of pangolins across Asia and Africa has provided insight into these important outstanding questions. From wildlife products in the trade and markets we can now reconstruct wildlife trade networks and identify pathogen infection using advanced genomics tools. While many questions remain surrounding the future of pangolins, wildlife trade research can lead to key insights into both conservation of biodiversity and public health globally.
Bio: Prof. Timothy Bonebrake is Professor and Director of the School of Biological Sciences at The University of Hong Kong.
