About this Event

"Autumn" by Ali Smith. This profound and innovative novel marks the first installment in Smith's acclaimed Seasonal Quartet. "Autumn" seamlessly weaves together themes of time, memory, and art, creating a tapestry of contemporary British life that is both timeless and deeply relevant. The artist at the center of this book is Pauline Boty. There are also often references to the Profumo affair which I feel will provide further interesting discussion.

This will be my second time reading the series and I am really looking forward to it. I think that these novels are modern classics and skillfully weave together Britain's past and present all the while maintaining a sense of good humour.

About the Book

"Autumn" is a story that explores the lives of two unlikely friends: Elisabeth Demand, a thirty-two-year-old art history lecturer, and Daniel Gluck, a centenarian former songwriter. Their relationship, rooted in conversations about art and culture, spans generations and offers a poignant reflection on the passage of time. Against the backdrop of a post-Brexit Britain, Smith's narrative shifts between past and present, painting a vivid picture of the country's current socio-political landscape while delving into the personal histories of her characters.

Ali Smith’s writing is characterized by its lyrical prose and inventive narrative style. Her ability to blend the personal with the political, and to juxtapose the every day with the extraordinary, makes "Autumn" a compelling and thought-provoking read.
