Artists Talk DC #8 – Transcendence Through Art

The Darryl Chappell Foundation proudly announces the eighth installment of its popular Artists Talk Series, featuring renowned local artists Broadie and Luis del Valle, in conversation with attorney, art collector, art advisor, and journalist, Andrew S. Jacobson. Titled "Transcendence Through Art", Artists Talk DC#8 delves into the transformative power of art and its role in challenging systemic inequalities.

Objective

In partnership with The Black Art Today Foundation, the Darryl Chappell Foundation presents this opportunity for dialogue, reflection, and action. "Transcendence Through Art" aims to inspire the audience to envision and contribute actively to a more just and equitable society.

What is to be transcended? One area of exploration is the theory of Afropessimism. Afropessimism suggests that the enduring despair felt by Black people stems from historical oppression. A bleak outlook is suggested given systemic anti-Blackness. Founder, Chairman & CEO, Darryl Chappell. “Afropessimism proposes accepting that these systems will not be replaced, and that anti-Blackness endures forever. Instinctively, I think art might help us explore seeing the world differently”.

Join us in person as we explore the life experiences, creative processes, and strategies of confronting adversity through art hearing from Luis and Broadie. Artists Talk DC #8 promises to be a lively encounter centered on art and the community.

Prince George's County, MD Graphic Artist Broadie fell in love with art when he was a child in elementary school. The moment his teacher gave him a pair of scissors to start cutting shapes, he knew he wanted to create. He still remembers using cotton balls, popsicle sticks, paint, and glitter to create a snowman. He dreamed of having his designs on billboards for people to stop and stare. He was first introduced to digital art in 2005 attending Bowie State University, a Historical Black College (HBCU), majoring in Fine Arts. Through his coursework, Broadie’s skills in digital art were shaped. While at Bowie State University he took classes in photography, sculpture, and drawing but something about digital art felt natural to him. Broadie shows his love for digital art by blending his skills in graphic design and love of mixed media, bringing about a perfect marriage of his two passions. Broadie’s inspiration has been birthed from the richness of Black History, the past, present and possibilities of the future. Being a Black Gay Male artist, he hopes to inspire the future generations of creators by encouraging them to believe in themselves, while going after their dreams. Art has the power to heal, to inspire, and to remind us of the beauty and hope that reside within each of us. He wants to encourage people to fully embrace and love who they are, and to be proud of it.
