About this Event
Many artists feel the struggle of putting words to their work. Good artist statements come from within the work itself – an outward reflection of inner interrogations of the artist’s true passions and purpose. Bad statements are applied to the work or exist as a cloud that hovers above it.
For this Artist Statement Writing Workshop, our March Artist in Resident, Jan Brugger will impart her experience reading & writing artist statements in a setting that also gives time to participants to explore their own work and ideas. Participating artists must come with 5-10 images of their work (printed cheaply on copy paper or collected in a folder on their phone/laptop).
During the workshop, participants will:
· Review artist statement examples.
· Discuss common problems (passive voice/too word-y, words unrelated to work, too many lists, too general, assuming reactions, etc.)
· Practice observing and writing about other artworks
· Find the “why”
· Construct a 3 sentence statement
Spots for this workshop are limited! Sign up today.

Bio: Jan Brugger is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and administrator from the “Swiss Cheese Capital of the USA”. She stages distorted versions of reality that reflect cultural anxieties and amplify the counter forces that vibrate between everything. Her colorful formations activate the senses with attention to physicality, rhythm, and mise-en-scène.
