You know it is a good day in NYC when you can get VIP tours of two of the top luxury brands in the world in one session! Madison Avenue is definitely the place to be when it comes to shopping in style and these two locales are absolutely spectacular (and across the street from each other on East 63rd Street! Both places are providing us with private walk-throughs and well as the opportunity to shop to your heart's content.
STOP #1: HERMES TOUR - 9 -10 am
The group will meet in the morning for a before-opening hours private tour at Hermès Maison Madison (706 Madison Avenue), the brand's glamorous five-story flagship location, the largest in the United States. Hermes, founded in 1837 in Paris, began specializing in saddlery and equestrian products and soon expanded into fashion and beauty business. Growing demand led to an international presence, including their Madison Ave flagship that opened in 2022. We will tour this 1921 Neo-Federal-style building, a restored landmarked branch of the Bank of NY with ties to Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Some original architectural elements have been preserved including an antique clock and 49-foot Portuguese limestone staircase. The displays of merchandise from handbags (especially Birkins), shoes, fragrances, womenswear, menswear, home goods and more are curated perfectly for the sophisticated shopper. We will also be guided past many significant works of art on view throughout the store. For generations, the Hermès family have been dedicated art collectors, so it's a joy to artfully explore the site. A highlight is a visit to the rooftop garden area with its famous Napoleonic equestrian statue holding two Hermès silk scarves looking down at the street below.
STOP #2: LALIQUE TOUR - 10:30 am-12 pm
Our next stop is across the street at Lalique's Maison d’Artiste. This French company is renowned for its fine craftsmanship of artistic glass, crystal and decorative items, perfumes, interior design, and art collaborations with artists like Damien Hirst, Renè Magritte, James Turrell and others. Since 1888. René-Jules Lalique and his heirs are responsible for their signature Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles and later evolving with more creativity and brilliance over the years. Everywhere you turn are Lalique masterpieces in incredibly chic settings. We are getting the VIP treatment as we are escorted throughout this elegantly decorated townhouse. Its interior showcases the house's newest collections, including Lalique furniture and lighting, objects d'art, perfume bottles, jewelry and special edition art pieces jointly produced by prominent artists. What a treat to discover all the decorative details in every room that truly let each Lalique piece shine! Every floor of this building, where the Bloomingdale family and music star Diana Ross once lived, has been designed to perfection from its gallery-style showrooms to its exclusive Art Deco bar and lounge space that makes visitors feel like they just boarded the Orient Express! There is one unexpected feature in the stairwell - a hand-painted mural by Chris “Daze” Ellis, a prolific street artist of the 1970s. If we showed you a photo now, it would ruin the surprise! What a modern touch to a timelessly classic experience.
