OVERVIEW exhibition

Pyrography comes from the Greek words pur (fire) and graphos (writing), meaning "writing with fire." It is an ancient artistic technique in which designs are burned into a surface-typically wood, but sometimes also leather, paper, or bone-using a heated metal tool. What Pyrographic Work Involves:The Tool: Artists use a heated metal pen or stylus, often electrically powered, to scorch or char the surface. The Technique: By varying the temperature and pressure, artists can create different shades and textures-from delicate light lines to deep, dark burns. The Medium: Wood is the most common canvas, chosen for its grain and how it responds to heat. The artist must work carefully and slowly, as mistakes cannot be erased.Artistic Significance:Pyrography merges drawing and sculpture, as each mark literally carves into the surface. It creates a monochrome, textured effect that is both visual and tactile.Contemporary artists like Carlo Giuseppe Proietto use it to tell stories about identity, mernory, and transformation, bringing a traditional craft into the realm of conceptual fine art.

ARTIST PROFILE

Carlo Giuseppe Proietto is an Italian artist known internationally for elevating the ancient technique of pyrography into the realm of contemporary fine art. Born in Italy and currently based in Foggia, Proietto uses fire to etch complex emotional narratives into wood. His monochromatic works often incorporate surrealistic elements and are marked by sharp, deliberate lines and figurative symbolism. Themes of identity, memory, compassion, and transformation permeate his practice. Proietto's works have been exhibited across Europe, Asia, and the United States, and he has authored several books on pyrography, including his most recent monograph which will be available during the exhibition.
