Chicago Arpilleras
Cross-generational participants will incorporate various fiber techniques to tell stories, using techniques inspired by the Chilean arpilleras. During Pinochet’s military dictatorship (1973–1989), poor women whose husbands and sons “disappeared”, gathered secretly around tables to sew brightly colored patchwork tapestries as a way to document and denounce their oppression. Stitching together was a quiet and powerful act of resistance and community building. It was a way to share their sorrows with each other, and eventually the world.
Guided by artist Teri Carson, this project will bring together members of the community to create a final piece to be exhibited long-term at the Impact House in Chicago.
The workshop is offered in two 6-week sessions, and you may register for one session or both:
SESSION ONE: February 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4, 11
SESSION TWO: March 18, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
(No session on March 25 due to spring break.)
Registration:
• $50 for one 6-week session
• $75 for both sessions (12 weeks total)
