Transformative may not be an urgent enough word to describe Grammy award-winning artist, Arooj Aftab. Her expansive repertoire is infused with jazz, South African, classical, pop and blues – which Aftab refers to as “global soul”.After spending her adolescence in Pakistan, Aftab moved to Boston to study jazz at Berklee College of Music. Since 2021, she has delivered “rapturous performances” at major venues and international festivals and has been awarded a Grammy for Best Global Music Performance of her song, ‘Mohabbat’. The scale of Aftab’s musical inheritances are on brilliant display in her Grammy-nominated album, ‘Love in Exile’ (2023) co-created with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily.
Her anticipated upcoming release, ‘Night Reign’, (2024) peaks the senses with each composition, each turn of phrase, each modulation. A cosmic soundscape to witness in Beacon Hall this winter.
