About this Event
As part of the development of a new theatre piece Are You Even Indian?,
we are running a series of community co-creation workshops across the UK, with recent sessions in Leicester and Wolverhampton. For the next one, we are coming to Brighton, ahead of our performances at Brighton Fringe (12–13 May).
These sessions are relaxed, welcoming spaces that bring people together to explore themes of identity, migration, home and belonging within the South Asian diaspora. They are designed to centre lived experience and feed directly into the development of the work.
Participants will spend time in the room with Mohit Mathur (writer of the piece) and Leigh Toney (Director), engaging in:
- Open conversation and story sharing
- Gentle creative prompts around ideas of home and belonging
- Optional movement or dance exploration (including light Bollywood/Indian movement, only if participants feel comfortable)
The sessions tend to resonate with people who have:
- Felt not fully British, not fully South Asian
- Been asked “Where are you really from?”
- Experienced distance from or reconnection with “home”
- Reflected on language, roots or cultural identity
We aim to bring together an intergenerational group (18+), particularly people with connections to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or Nepal, though the space is open and accessible to anyone who connects with the themes. No theatre experience is required.
We would love for you to be part of this process, share your experiences, and help shape the work.
You can also catch Are You Even Indian? at Brighton Fringe on 12–13 May and see how these stories come to life on stage.
