ANZAC Cottage has an inspiring and unique history. The first war memorial built to honour those who fought at Gallipoli had a dual purpose; along with the commemorations the “Monument on the Mount” also provided a home for a returned serviceman who had fought at Gallipoli and his family. Patriotic community members provided labour skills money building materials and dedication to raise this charming cottage in one day in February 109 years ago.
The Friends of ANZAC Cottage invite you to join us as we pay tribute to those who felt the horrors of war and the men and women back home who crafted this fantastic tribute. On Sunday February 9 from 4 pm to 6 pm the Cottage will be open to the public to see the beautiful handwork in the Cottage built with love and respect and to learn more about its fascinating history.
One of the original Porter family members who resided in the Cottage will share the story of its origins. This unique opportunity to hear from a direct descendant of the Cottage's history is a privilege and an honour. The narrative will be followed by Peter Ramsay the former President of the Vietnam Veterans Association of WA who led the restoration of this historic icon during the 1990s/2000s.
By special arrangement the 10-minute film from the Revelation Film Festival'The Private Life of a War Memorial' will be shown at the Cottage for the first time. This film which delves into the intangible heritage and spirit of dedication of the community and the women who lived in the Cottage offers audiences and visitors a ‘sense of place’ and compelling emotional connections that continue to resonate over a century later. It's a unique opportunity to feel connected and moved by the rich history of the Cottage.
On this day the Cottage situated at 38 Kalgoorlie Street Mount Hawthorn will be open for entry by donation and refreshments will be available. It's a lovely family day that not only reveals our community’s rich history but also celebrates our strength of spirit. We invite you to join us and feel proud and inspired by our shared heritage.
