About this Event
Tombolo Books is PROUD to present the launch event for Anywhere Else: Essays on Florida by our very own Rachel Knox! In this beautiful, big-hearted collection, Knox explores images of Florida in pop culture together with her own experiences growing up in Florida and discussions of issues central to life in the state.
We couldn't be more excited to launch this book into the literary world and celebrate an incredible accomplishment of one of our own! Knox will be in conversation with local poet Tyler Gillespie!
More about Anywhere Else
In Anywhere Else, Rachel Knox explores images of Florida in pop culture together with her own experiences growing up in Florida and discussions of issues central to life in the state—class, violence, religion, women’s rights, and sexuality. Knox’s eclectic essays consider subjects including Florida serial killer Aileen Wuornos, painter Thomas Kinkade and the Florida Highwaymen, Ralph Waldo Emerson in St. Augustine, the X-Files monster of the week, and a queer film made in Florida in 1914. This book is a lively, sharp, and witty read that will be enjoyed by readers both within and far outside the state.
Rachel Knox is a writer born and raised in Tampa Bay. She teaches writing at the University of South Florida and is a bookseller at Tombolo Books in St. Petersburg.
Tyler Gillespie, a fifth-generation Floridian, is a poet and award-winning journalist. He has written for GQ, the Guardian, the Nation, VICE, and Salon. He is the author of Florida Man: Poems, Revisited and coeditor of The Awkward Phase: The Uplifting Tales of Those Weird Kids You Went to School With.
