About this Event

Animals in the Pasture & Ethical Harvest

Join us at Good Rain Farm, where we will hear from farmer Michelle Week about her experience and values with raising animals for meat and her harvest practice. She will discuss her current project, working with fowl in the pasture, and the larger picture of pasture ecology on the farm. Lunch provided.

During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to witness an ethical harvest and processing practice for the farm flock of Muscovy Ducks and gain hands-on experience if they choose to. If you are thinking of attending, please consider the impact that witnessing and/or taking part in the slaughter of an animal may have on you.

This opportunity does come with a stipend. A W9 with the most up to date information is REQUIRED to receive a stipend. Our staff will be reaching out to registrants with instructions to confirm your attendance and receipt of necessary documentation.

There are 12 available slots for participants. Although there will be a waitlist we're asking that folks who may anticipate any scheduling conflicts cancel their registration to allow others to participate. Registration will close when slots are filled!!!

At the end of this workshop, an engaged participant will be able to:

  • Understand how to scale-up a farm business by adding meat products and the local regulations involved
  • Identify the values of nutrient cycling in the pasture and growing soil health
  • Understand the relationship between animals and habitat management on the farm
  • Harvest and processing methods for fowl

This workshop is a great opportunity for farmers who are considering adding animals to their farm business or want to learn about healthy pasture management to grow their knowledge and skills.

About the Organizers

Ecotrust

Ecotrust is a regional nonprofit working in partnership from California to Alaska toward the vision of a more just, prosperous, and climate-smart future. Ecotrustโ€™s mission is to inspire fresh thinking that creates economic opportunity, social equity, and environmental well-being. Our goal is to foster a natural model of development that creates more resilient communities, economies, and ecosystems here and around the world. Our approach focuses on impact at the intersections of equity, the economy, and the environment. Together, we uplift Indigenous leadership to respond to contemporary land and water management challenges, connect schools with local producers, provide technical support for community-centered businesses, and more.

Black Food Sovereignty Coalition

The Black Food Sovereignty Coalition's (BFSC) mission is to ignite Black and Brown communities to participate as owners and movement leaders within food systems, placemaking, and economic development. We serve as a collaboration hub for Black and Brown communities to confront the systemic barriers that make food, place and economic opportunities inaccessible to us. BFSC is focused on meeting these barriers with creative, innovative, and sustainable solutions.

Good Rain Farm

We tend the land with 7 generations in mind, a concept widely held by many cultures the world over. The farm celebrates all forms of foods emphasizing traditional native foods. What cannot be consumed or worn is then given back to the earth mimicking the cycles of life and death found in all ecosystems throughout the world.

The philosophies that create the foundation and drive the actions of the farm are holistic in nature. Creating a deep connection to place, sharing lore to build community founded on these relationships through shared stories and experiences is foremost for Good Rain Farm. Living in harmony with the land is no doubt challenging, more so these days when indigenous cultures are silenced, unrecognized and attacked as is the Earth as it confronts climate change. Together, through this farm, we can build and sustain food sovereignty for our community.
