About:
Andrew Meyer is a Chicago-based freelance trombonist, composer, bandleader, copyist, arranger and educator. He is a St. Louis native who moved to Chicago to complete a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies at DePaul University. During his time in St. Louis, Andrew studied trombone, composition, and arranging with Wayne Coniglio, a former arranger and bass trombonist with Ray Charles. While at DePaul University, Andrew studied with world class musicians and educators including: Dana Hall, Tom Matta, Tim Coffman, Chad McCullough, and Scott Burns. When Andrew was attending school for both his Bachelor’s degree as well as Master’s degree, he was able to perform with Nicholas Payton, Jimmy Greene, Christian McBride, Sean Jones, Brandee Younger, Randy Brecker, Geoffrey Keezer and Joe Locke among others.
Since leaving DePaul, Andrew has performed with the Ira Sullivan Quintet, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, Guy King, Ted Hogarth’s Mulligan Mosaics, Metropolitan Jazz Octet featuring Dee Alexander, Tony Orlando, Deborah Cox, Steve Wiest, Clark Sommers and many other notable Chicago musicians.
He can be heard playing regularly with Heisenberg Uncertainty Players, Blueshift Big Band, Bob Lark Alumni Big Band, Shout Section Big Band, Sam Pilnick Nonet, Interlace Sextet and many other local big bands and small group ensembles. He has been fortunate to perform at some of Chicago’s staple venue’s including the Jazz Showcase, Winters Jazz Club, The Green Mill, Fulton Street Collective, Hey Nonny in Arlington Heights, Jazz St. Louis and Epiphany Center for the Arts.
Andrew Meyer leads his own ensemble, the Andrew Meyer Quintet, featuring all of his original music. The quintet formed in the early summer of 2020 as a means to expressive creativity when opportunities had stopped due to the Pandemic. The Andrew Meyer Quintet has been fortunate to perform at some of Chicago’s best venues for jazz including the Green Mill, Elastic Arts, Fulton Street Collective and Phyllis Musical Inn. The group has also performed at Merriman’s Playhouse in South Bend, IN as well as The Dark Room in St. Louis, MO.
In July of 2024, he will self-release his debut album as a leader titled "SILVER LININGS". The album features original compositions written during the 2020 Pandemic. These compositions are a culmination of Andrew's creativity, growth and musical journey of self-discovery during a time of uncertainty. The music reflects Andrew’s deep admiration of jazz music’s historic subgenres of hard bop and post-bop infused with the modern influence of Chicago’s vibrant music scene. The music is also a reflection of Andrew’s upbringing as well as a geographical storytelling of his life in Chicago. This music was Andrew's Silver Lining in the face of adversity.
