About this Event

This seminar is part of the Ruskin College, Oxford 125th Anniversary Lecture Series. Ruskin College has been providing routes into higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds since the 19th century. It has also been a home for progressive thought and ideas for more than a century and hosted the UK’s first National Women’s Liberation Conference. To mark our 125th year anniversary we are organising a series of lectures by prominent thinkers and policymakers focused on the future of capitalism, inequality, education and skills.

In this second event for the 125th Anniversary Lecture Series, Will Hutton will discuss solutions “remake” the UK in light of his recent book “This Time No Mistakes: How to Remake Britain”. The book shows how we can uphold a “We Society” rather than an “I society”, which views “the duty to treat people fairly” as its core ethos. Will Hutton has a long and prestigious career in politics and media. He was formerly editor-in-chief for the Observer, Chief Executive for the Work Foundation and Principal of Hertford College. He now co-chairs the Purposeful company and is the president designate of the Academy of Social Sciences. He was also best known for his influential works “The State We're In” and “World We’re In” in which he set out a “Third way” for social democracy.

Key issues will include:

· What intellectual traditions can we draw inspiration from to address the UK’s present problems?

· How can we transition from an “I society” to a “We society” where all are treated fairly?

· How can businesses both increase economic growth and reduce social inequality?

· What does a British state fit for the 21st century look like?
