KYOTOGRAPHIE 2026 South Africa In Focus シンポジウム「自由の音色：アートと音楽はどのようにアパルトヘイトに抗ったのか」
毎年春に開催される国際的な写真祭「KYOTOGRAPHIE 京都国際写真祭」。今年は8の国と地域から、14組のアーティストの展示を12会場で開催し、さまざまなイベントも多数実施します。写真祭の一環として南アフリカにフォーカスし、「South Africa In Focus」と題し同国の歴史と写真表現の多様性を体現する、3世代によるアーティストの作品と、フォトブック・コレクションを展示します。
南アフリカの歴史や、文化・芸術の奥深さにふれるべく、特別シンポジウムを開催します。展示作家のレボハン・ハンイェ、ピーター・ヒューゴ、キュレーターのショーン・オトゥール、アーティストのムサキ（ムサキ×トゥバツィ）に加え、同国の黒人初の大統領となったネルソン・マンデラの曾孫であるシヤブレラ・マンデラが登壇。ジャーナリストのジリアン・ウルフをモデレーターに迎え、南アフリカ出身の各領域の第一人者が一堂に会します。アパルトヘイト後の複雑な社会状況や芸術の役割について、現代の世界情勢と照らし合わせながら議論を交わす、極めて貴重な多角的な対話の場となるでしょう。シンポジウムの後には、MSAKI×TUBATSI（ムサキ×トゥバツィ）が、ボーダレス・ミュージックフェスティバル「KYOTOPHONIE」の一環としてパフォーマンスを同会場にて行います。

KYOTOGRAPHIE 2026 South Africa in Focus Symposium
“The Sound of Freedom: How Art and Music Resisted Apartheid”
As a core highlight of the South Africa In Focus program, exhibiting artists Pieter Hugo and Lebohang Kganye will be joined by curator Sean O'Toole for a dialogue around art and politics. Extending these conversations is a special visit from Siyabulela Mandela, great-grandson of Nelson Mandela. Mandela will take part in a conversation with the exhibiting artists and curators, moderated by journalist Jillian Wolf.
This session offers a rare, multi-dimensional perspective on the complex social landscape of post-apartheid South Africa and the role of art within contemporary global affairs. It is an invaluable opportunity to hear these prominent South African voices engage in a deep exploration of history and creative expression. Following these discussions, musicians MSAKI×TUBATSI will perform for KYOTOPHONIE at the same venue, Higashi Honganji.
