The smelt are coming!
Run Smelt Run is a non-motorized, outdoor parade performance on Sunday May 17th, 2026, in celebration of the annual smelt run on Lake Superior.
This will be a lively, site-specific spectacle, featuring masks, large puppets, and two Brass Bands! The Brass Messengers and Boys Back Home.
Images will include:
- a stilt walking Royal Guard.
- an energetic school of silver smelt puppet and mask dancers.
- a musical procession featuring a giant Smelt Queen.
The parade will begin at 3:30pm, at the Aerial Lift Bridge, on the lawn in front of the Army Corps of Engineers Building, with a brief performance to introduce the puppets and the Brass Messengers.
Everyone will be invited to join the procession down the Lakewalk.
Wear silver. Smelt Up!
Following the parade will be a smelt fry and dance at Zeitgeist Arts Cafe, 222 E. Superior St
