About this Event
Setting the event for Saturday, May 25th, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM and enjoying a journey including a 2-hour movie streaming and post-discussion. The discussion will focus on topics of gender roles in Asian families, women's struggle and resilience, and of course, art and women's life.
The movie we would like to play and discuss is a Taiwanese movie "Reclaim"《一家之主》. The movie talks about gender roles in a Chinese-speaking family with the mother character as the protagonist. The mother is a successful career woman who runs an art studio for children. In the meanwhile, she is also a woman dedicated so much to her family.
Culture-wise, the movie features most Asian women's struggle between ambition in career and family obligations. Art-wise, the movie is about a woman who runs an art studio, yet her art business is still somewhat looked down upon by her traditional husband who thinks art is just not serious enough to be counted as "business."
Please note that events may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
"AAPI Heritage Month Cultural Festival 2024" is sponsored by Chicago Community Trust.
