Like her brother Felix, Fanny Mendelssohn was a childhood prodigy composing and performing virtuosic music from a very early age.
As a young woman when her parents suggest she put her already burgeoning “public life” behind her in order to marry and start a family, she is beset by the warring contradictions in her heart.
Set in the turbulent times of 19th Century Berlin, she must navigate prejudice against a woman’s place in the world and far reaching antisemitism, while forging her own understanding of social injustice and personal responsibility.
This drama- an historical fiction- follows her journey to fully express and harmonize her talents, her wishes for her own fulfillment and for the greater world.
Written by NYC based Irish American playwright, Tim McGillacuddy. His play Herself, was developed through the Origin reading series and produced as part of Origin First Irish Festival 2024 by the Drilling Company NYC. The Irish Play was produced and directed by Theodore Mann and Holly Villaire in New York and by Joker Thief Theater in Galway and Dublin. The Sparrow with a Clipped Wing was performed at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. He is the author of thirteen books of poetry and performs poetry and music LIVE with Call Out the Muse.
