In this next edition of my Somatic Nervous System Regulation series, we'll get straight into embodied practice to help address the symptoms of OVERWHELM. The overwhelm state occurs when the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and dorsal vagal (freeze) states are activated at the same time. Some of the most common symptoms are:
- Racing thoughts, intense stress
- Muscular aches and chronic tension
- Sleep impairment, chronic exhaustion, brain fog
- Hopelessness, despair, panic attacks
- Feeling trapped or out of control
- Emotional swings between anxiety and shutdown
I will share a series of simple, quick embodied (somatic) routines to:
- Interrupt the overwhelm episode
- Flush the overwhelm energy out of your body
- Bring yourself back to calm and balance
- Re-calibrate your nervous system so you can rest and recover
Whether your episodes occur at home, work, school, or in public, you will leave with actionable resources to help yourself shift quickly and discreetly, so that you can face the world and re-engage with life.
Please dress comfortably and bring a blanket and towel. We will work standing, sitting, lying down, and with props. It's a good idea to bring a notebook as I'll teach you specific overwhelm-management routines for morning, during the day and night.
