About this Event
Connect with fellow creatives and learn about what makes design and development distinct in the north during the Northern Design Bus Tour hosted by the Alaska Design Forum and the Anchorage Museum. Join Julie Decker, Evelyn Rousso, and Julia Foland as they share knowledge about the community and consider Anchorage's future through the lens of Generation/Regeneration.
The comfortable, informal tour bus trip will include short conversational presentations at a series of curated stops that highlight historical and contemporary planning and design efforts in subarctic environments. Local professionals and community experts will share insights and welcome discussion about multiple topics, from historic development patterns and typologies to the challenges of logistics and subarctic site and building design. Enjoy contemplating how cities adapt and regenerate in southcentral Alaska while connecting with others who pursue creative practice in the north.
Tickets: $30 per person, space is limited.
The bus will depart from the Wild Birch hotel at 239 W. 4th Avenue outside their coffee shop at 1p sharp and return at approximately 4p.
Snacks will be available during the journey. Tour destinations have been identified to demonstrate a variety of design solutions and generate discussion about Anchorage's rich history and development of our urban community.
Northern Design Bus Tour group at Hatcher Pass Lodge. Anchorage Design Week 2025.
During past Anchorage Design Weeks, visiting speakers and creatives have noted that the fun and insightful chats with practicing professionals during host-guided tours have sparked ideas and revealed layers of life in the north that may not otherwise have been considered. So, Anchorage Design Week hosts are excited to open up this tour to interested folks and knowledgeable collaborators.
The tour welcomes local designers and firm leaders as well as constructors and the design curious to relay knowledge, experience, and perspectives alike. You are encouraged to share insights about what you consider when working in the north, and what makes our place especially distinct during the journey. Conversations are intended to further the potential for learning. Together we can better explain why things look or function the way they do while ideating and elevating our own practice with new knowledge.

Anchorage Design Week: February 25 - March 1, 2026
Organized by the Anchorage Museum with numerous community partners, Anchorage Design Week is an annual gathering of creative minds to promote and inspire place-based design and imagine the future of our city and the lifeways of Northern regions. Design Week welcomes community members and creatives to consider the role of design in advancing positive futures through visuals, interventions, workshops, and conversations.
As we celebrate what makes Alaska distinct, we look forward to connecting with you and our community - and maybe shaking off a bit of cabin fever - as Anchorage Design Week again coincides with Anchorage Fur Rendezvous festivities in late February.
Anchorage Design Week is a project of the Anchorage Museum in collaboration with the Alaska Design Forum, the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects, University of Alaska Anchorage, NeighborWorks Alaska, and AIGA Alaska. Anchorage Design Week is a member of World Design Weeks.
