Anansi the Spider — live storytelling, music, and playful family fun inspired by West African and Caribbean folk tales.
About this Event

As part of the Hidden Beach Summer of Culture, this special children’s event brings the legendary folk character Anansi the Spider to life through live storytelling, music, and participatory play.

Children and families are invited into the playful world of Anansi — the clever trickster known for his wit, imagination, and storytelling — in a session that blends spoken word, rhythm, and live musical accompaniment. With support from live musicians, the story becomes a rich, immersive experience that sparks curiosity, laughter, and creative thinking.

Following the storytelling, families can enjoy a relaxed lunch break with food from Kitchen.HiddenBeach, creating space to rest, eat, and connect in a warm, welcoming community environment.

The afternoon continues with a hands-on participatory music workshop, where children explore rhythm, sound, and playful instruments inspired by storytelling, character, and movement. Young participants are encouraged to experiment, collaborate, and express themselves through music — building confidence, listening skills, and creative freedom.

This event supports early cultural engagement, imaginative learning, and family-friendly community experiences, while introducing children to storytelling traditions rooted in West African and Caribbean folklore. Themes of creativity, cleverness, cooperation, and oral storytelling run throughout the session, offering both entertainment and cultural enrichment.

Designed for children and families, Anansi at Hidden Beach offers a joyful, accessible introduction to live storytelling, music-making, and collective imagination — a perfect companion to the Tiddalik story session within the wider Summer of Culture programme.
