More than 185 years ago, Dr. Samuel Pieh’s great, great grandfather led the powerful Amistad Uprising and its landmark legal battle which changed the course of history. It is a story that elevates courage, resilience, collaboration, and the determination to obtain human rights for all.
Dr. Samuel Pieh will share the fascinating impact of his great, great grandfather's heroic efforts through the lens of a proud descendent.
The interview will be facilitated by Troy Brown, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion State of Connecticut Judicial Branch.
Dr. Samuel H. Pieh is a descendant of Sengbe (Cinque) Pieh of the Amistad story and served as a language coach for the Amistad movie by Debbie Allen and Steven Spielberg. He completed his early education in Sierra Leone and earned undergraduate, graduate, and honorary doctoral degrees in the USA. His accolades include a Lifetime Honorable Achievement award (2019, Sierra Leone), the Biden Presidential Achievement Award (2024), and recognition as a Distinguished Leader in Medical Missions in Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone.
Dr. Pieh is an educator, author, public health leader, and advocate for equity and justice.
