Join Us for An Exchange with Mining Activists from Peru!
Come hang out in person and dive into an eye-opening conversation with mining activists from Peru. This is your chance to learn firsthand about their struggles, research and hopes for the future.
Paul Maquet (CooperAccion) and Edwin Alejandro (Red Muqui) are on a speakers tour in Europe, to raise awareness about mining in Peru.
Peru is a major producer of many minerals which are considered critical for strategic sectors like renewable energy, defense and tech: copper, zinc, silver, gold, etc.
But the benefits of the large resource wealth of Peru have hardly benefited the local population. Approximately 10 million people in Peru suffer from toxic metals in their blood, which is mainly caused by the mining industry.
As the mining industry expands in Peru under the banner of ‘energy transition’, local populations and indigenous people are campaigning for their right to live in a healthy environment and for Free and Prior Informed Consent.
An example of reckless expansion of the mining sector in Peru is the planned Ariana copper mine. This mine is planned in the highlands that supply water to Lima, a city of 10 million inhabitants that is located in a desert and has large problems with water supply. If the mine suffers from an accident, which is quite possible, since it would be located in a seismic area, the water supply of Lima is at risk. Alpayana, the company that wants to build the mine, secured a 100 million US$ loan from Santander Bank last year. Local citizens have been campaigning and litigating against the Ariana mine for more than 10 years.
Paul and Edwin will show a video about mining and will share their testimonies and research.
