About this Event

Join us for an evening celebrating local history and culture in York with Dr Susan Major and John Shaw.

The evening will consist of two talks, the first given by Dr Major, discussing the carefully curated book ‘Micklegate: The Great Street of York’. Developed with Clements Hall Local History Group, together they have crafted this beautifully researched and richly illustrated book on the history of Micklegate in York.

Dr Major will be joined by the chairman of the Yorkshire Architectural & York Architectural Society, John Shaw. John will be speaking about the late Hugh Murray’s book Photographs and Photographers of York. Originally published in 1986, much of Murray’s collection of photographs are now managed by the Yorkshire Architectural and York Archaeological Society, of which Murray was the chair for many years.

Doors will open at 6.45pm for a 7pm start.Light refreshments (drinks) will be available.

About the book: Micklegate: The Great Street of York

Micklegate could be regarded as the most handsome street in York, sweeping down the hill from Micklegate Bar in an elegant curve to the river.
In this well researched local guide to one of York's most significant streets, the Clements Hall Local History Group deep dive into the businesses that traded along here, the shifting cultures and residents, and its significant role in the rich tapestry of York history.

About the Book: Photographs and Photographers of York (Murray, 1986)

‘Photographs and photographers of York: The Early years, 1814-1879’ covers the lives of many of the very first photographers who ever took photographs of this ancient city - people like Henry Fox Talbot, William Pumphrey, John Ward Knowles and Joseph Duncan - and reproduces many of their photos.
