The Anglo-Portuguese Society is delighted to invite you to a very special evening celebrating one of Portugal’s most evocative and tradition-rich musical forms: Academic Fado.
Founded in 1992, the group was created by students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, who came together to enrich their academic experience through music and to preserve the academic tradition of Fado. Through sung melodies and guitar chords, they celebrate not only Coimbra Fado and Portuguese music, but also the spirit that unites everyone who finds in this music an expression of identity, memory, and belonging.
Over more than three decades, the group has proudly carried forward this legacy across generations, performing at Monumental Serenades, Fado Nights, Anniversary Galas, and many other events reflecting their deep dedication to musical artistry. Beyond Portugal, they have also toured internationally to connect with Portuguese communities abroad, sharing music and tradition across the world, from the United States to Asia, and across Europe including Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany, France, among other destinations.
This London concert is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together and experience an authentic Academic Fado performance by one of the Porto Academy’s longest-standing Fado groups.
A venue with deep Portuguese connections
This church has a unique historical link to Portugal. Its origins trace back to a chapel established in the 1730s at the Portuguese Embassy in Golden Square. During a period when Roman Catholic worship in England was restricted under the Penal Laws, Catholic chapels often existed under the protection of foreign embassies. The Portuguese Embassy chapel became an important spiritual home for Catholics in London, widely used by the city’s Catholic population and served by several chaplains, well beyond the needs of embassy staff alone.
