In 1876 one of the most daring prison escapes in Australia’s history occurred in Western Australia when six Irish political prisoners (Fenians) escaped from Fremantle Prison and sailed to America on the whaling ship Catalpa.Mr. Jim Ryan, a direct descendant of Captain George Anthony, is on a goodwill visit from New Bedford, Massachusetts to WA to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Catalpa Rescue, and to give a series of lectures on his great-grand father’s involvement in the famous rescue. His lectures will include personal family photographs, artefacts, and storylines passed down through generations.
Mr. Ryan, who visited Bunbury in 2018 to present Bunbury Museum + Heritage Centre with a model of Catalpa, will again visit Bunbury to give one of his lectures.
