Grammy Award artist Roman Filiu has been a saxophonist, bandleader, composer for over 20 years. Born and raised in Santiago de Cuba, he has played, recorded, and toured worldwide with a great variety of artists. Among his many collaborations, Román has played in Chucho Valdés Irakere (Grammy Award nominated album Babalú Ayé, Grammy Award winning album New Conceptions), he also has been the musical director of David Murray ́ s Big Band and has played with outstanding musicians like Andrew Cyrille, Gonzalo Rubalcaba (Grammy Award nominated album Antiguo), Dafnis Prieto(Grammy Award Winner 2018), the late master percussionist Milford Graves, Miguel Zenón, Chris Potter and Omara Portuondo just to name a few. The musician has been a recipient of the Jazz Gallery Commission Series, the Langnau Jazz Fest Artist in Residence, the Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Award, the Lucas Artist Residency and more recently the Conde Duque Artist in Residency Commission. He has established himself as a prominent and innovative composer through his work for numerous small ensembles and has written pieces for string quartet, solo piano and saxophone quartet. Roman has as a leader released the albums Blowin’ Reflections, Musa and Quarter which were praised by the press for their quality and depth. With Musae he won the Cubadisco International prize in the Jazz category in 2013. Later this year he will release a double album “Okán: El libro De Las Almas” and “Inkalimeva” under his own label Suona Records.
Martin Nevin is a Brooklyn-based composer. He has performed and/or recorded with notable artists such as Albert “Tootie” Heath, Billy Hart, Greg Osby, Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire, Ethan Iverson, and Aaron Parks, in venues across the U.S and abroad. In 2017 Martin released his debut album of intimate compositions for jazz quintet, “Tenderness is Silent,” which bassist Larry Grenadier referred to it as “really one of the best new recordings I have heard lately...the music conveys strong emotions and reverberates to the heart.” In that same year he was awarded a grant by the American Composers Forum to compose “Scratch at the Same Table,” a song cycle based on the poetry of Jonathan C. Creasy. His most recent release, “A Drowsy Shadow,” uses an electronic, synthesizer-based palette and features guest artists including Sam Gendel. Martin holds a B.M. from Manhattan School of Music and an M.A. from Columbia University.
Craig Weinrib is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and recordist in New York, NY. While studying literature at Columbia University, he began performing internationally and recording with some of the most well-respected improvising ensembles in the city and abroad. Upon receiving an invitation by the composer to participate in the world premier of “Old Locks and Irregular Verbs” in 2013, Weinrib built a decade-long creative relationship with Pulitzer Prize winner Henry Threadgill, and collaborated on the release of four recordings. Beginning in 2016, Weinrib began developing his own studio in New York, in which he performs and captures his own compositions, refining his sensibilities as a self-sufficient musical audio apparatus. Recent collaborations include Nick Hakim, Sam Gendel, Amen Dunes, Sam Wilkes, Dylan Day,and Daniel Aged.
