About this Event
Amma Samayal Arai: Food, Memory & Home
Join us for a FREE screening of Amma Samayal Arai (My Mother's Kitchen): Food, Memory & Home, an intimate and evocative short documentary that explores the powerful connections between food, memory, identity, and belonging.
Rooted in South Asian experiences and diasporic journeys, this film brings together deeply personal stories from kitchens, homes, and culinary spaces, where recipes are not just instructions, but inheritances. Through conversations across generations, Amma Samayal Array reflects on how food becomes a language of love, a vessel for memory, and a way of carrying βhomeβ across borders.
The event will be hosted in the East Common Room (Room 1034) at Hart House, University of Toronto (7 Hart House Circle, Toronto, ON M5S 3H3). The afternoon will begin with a screening of the film, followed by a thoughtful panel discussion featuring participants from the documentary, and an open Q&A with the audience. We invite you to stay after for informal mingling and community connection.
This project was generously supported by the Youth Excellence Showcase (YES) Program at Scarborough Guild Festival Theatre, whose commitment to emerging storytellers made this film possible.
