Agenda
Open Play
Info: We follow National Mahjong League (NMJL) rules for all play, along with a few House Rules that extend etiquette and help keep the games fair and fun for everyone. Our goal is to foster friendship, meet new people, and help players of all levels improve their skills.
When we have five or nine players, we usually rotate the last East out so a waiting player can join the table. With three players, we often use The Charleston—even though NMJL and tournament rules don’t allow it—if everyone at the table agrees on a method that works. Volunteers are welcome to rotate, and players can switch tables to keep the games fair and enjoyable for all.
Learning Table Agenda
Info: Welcome to the Learning Table! We’ll start with A Brief History of American Mahjong, giving you context for this fun and strategic game. Next, we’ll cover Understanding the Tiles & the Goal of the Game, so you know what to aim for each hand. We’ll then explore the Basic Building Blocks and practice Combining Tiles by Suit, helping you recognize patterns and sets. Along the way, we’ll discuss General Etiquette to make your play smooth and enjoyable. We’ll walk through the NMJL Card, highlighting common hands and strategies. You’ll learn The Charleston, the unique tile exchange process, and finally, we’ll wrap up with Guided Play, where you’ll apply your new skills in a friendly, hands-on session with support from instructors. By the end, you’ll feel confident joining open play and having fun with fellow players!
