About this Event

A decade or so after the birth of Impressionism during the late 19th century, American artists like Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, and Childe Hassam sought refuge in France from the Civil War. In turn, they developed new instruction, patronage and sources of inspiration in the picturesque landscapes of France. How did these artists merge the new French techniques — pioneered by French painters like Monet, Morisot, Degas, and Sisley — with the American spirit? It's time to explore how these artists captured fleeting moments of beauty and emotion, transforming everyday scenes into timeless masterpieces that continue to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide.

Join New York Adventure Club for an engaging three-part series that explores the fascinating exchange of ideas, techniques, and culture between American artists and their French counterparts during the transformative era of Impressionism. In Part Three: A Lasting Legacy, we'll explore the evolution of American Impressionism in the early 20th century, highlighting how later artists built upon the foundation laid by their predecessors, and the enduring legacy of Impressionism in American art.

Led by art historian Tosca Ruggieri, our virtual experience in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Impressionism will feature:

  • How later American Impressionists like Frederick Carl Frieseke and Helen Maria Turner expanded upon the original style, incorporating their unique interpretations and techniques
  • A look at the vital roles played by women artists like Lilla Cabot Perry and Matilda Browne, highlighting their innovative styles and the challenges they faced in a male-dominated art world
  • The significance of American Impressionist artist colonies, which fostered artistic exchange and inspired regional adaptations of the style, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations
  • A discussion of notable American museums that house impressive collections of Impressionist paintings, showcasing the movement's lasting impact on the art world

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Tosca — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

About Tosca

Growing up amongst the artistic treasures of North-Eastern France and Tuscany, art inspired Tosca from an early age. This led her to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History in Paris as well as a Master’s Degree in Art & Archaeology from EPHE-Sorbonne. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Arts & Cultural Management from King’s College London.

After a career in art galleries across London and teaching art history at French universities, Tosca embarked on creating Art with Tosca to share her passion for art. In D.C., Tosca crafts and leads curated tours of the National Gallery of Art, highlighting the museum’s collection of masterpieces from the Italian Renaissance to Modern masters.

Tosca wants to make art history accessible, interesting and engaging by transporting guests through centuries of art, either from the comfort of home through numerous lectures and virtual events, or locally in Washington D.C. through the halls of the National Gallery of Art.
