About this Event
An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork where an existing book (often one that is no longer wanted or outdated) is transformed into a new artistic creation. The book is altered by cutting, folding, painting, collaging, or otherwise modifying its pages and cover. Altered books are a safe space for self expression and hold many therapeutic benefits. You do not need to be an “artist” to create an altered book.
Participants will be provided a recycled book and will be shown 2 demonstrations of techniques as well as have access to a wide variety of art materials for the construction of the altered book. We will discuss optional themes including travel, self discovery, transformation, nature, nostalgia, etc. These themes can serve as starting points for participants to personalize their altered book projects based on their interests, experiences, and artistic inspirations. Everyone is encouraged to bring your own materials as well including pens/markers, textured paper, photographs, stencils, paint, etc. You are welcome to bring own book if you prefer, but books will be available.
We will have a closing circle where participants reflect on their experience, share their completed books (if comfortable), and discuss how they might continue their creative journey. This workshop aims to foster creativity, self-expression, and personal growth among participants.
**Light refreshments and snacks will be provided
