The African Desperate Friday, September 26th at 7:30PM📍Restoration Plaza, Bed-Stuy
1368 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11216
Alfreda’s Cinema is proud to add *Martine Syms’ The African Desperate (2022) to our Open-Air Summer 2025 series—a wildly sharp, funny, and disorienting ride through the mind of Palace Bryant (artist Diamond Stingily), a freshly minted MFA trying to escape the absurdity of art world academia.
Set over a single day in Upstate New York, the film follows Palace’s chaotic journey back to Chicago, dodging pretentious critiques, navigating an out-of-body party scene, and holding fast to her voice in a world trying to define her.
A vivid portrait of Black femme resistance, surreal detachment, and creative survival, this screening continues our commitment to bold, subversive cinema under the stars.
Opening the evening is DeeDee Casimir's Last Hoorah at G-baby's (2025).
Free'ish with RSVP. BYO seating!
