About this Event

Artificial Intelligence is a buzz phrase, and it's seemingly everywhere: ChatGPT, DALL-E, Midjourney, Claude, and more. It makes sense that it's also in your weather forecast - then again, it has been for decades. This program traces the weather enterprise's use of the technology of AI, presents a snapshot of how AI is being used today, and sneaks a peek into where it could go next.

Nate Johnson is VP of Weather Content and Operations for NBCUniversal Local. In this role, he works across the group's 44 stations, both English and Spanish-language, to ensure their weather teams have the tools, techniques, and training to serve their communities with the best weather forecasts possible. He also works with the group's technology, operations, and digital teams as a weather subject matter expert on app development and other key projects.

Prior to joining NBC, Johnson worked at WRAL-TV in Raleigh NC for a decade as a meteorologist and executive producer. His primary responsibility was collaborating with the meteorologists and other newsroom staff to make sure that the station presented weather information in a way that was interesting, informative, and understandable on TV, on the web, in apps, and on social media. He also worked on air, including hours of wall-to-wall coverage during the tornado outbreak of April 16, 2011. Previously, Johnson developed user-centered products and conducted training for Baron Services in Huntsville AL and served as a meteorologist (and eventually, chief meteorologist) at KTXS-TV in Abilene TX.

Johnson holds bachelor's degrees in Meteorology and Computer Science and a master's degree in Communication, all from NC State University in Raleigh, where he also teaches a broadcast meteorology course and provides on-site weather support for home football games and other events. He is an American Meteorological Society (AMS) Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and has earned the National Weather Association's (NWA) Seal of Approval. He is the president of the National Weather Association Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting meteorology students and educators with financial assistance and creating opportunities for public awareness and engagement for resilience to high impact weather. He was the president of the National Weather Association for 2021 and also holds a private pilot certificate.

This webinar will provide 1 PDH.
