About this Event
A Casual Conversation About Creativity, the Human Brain, and Why AI Can't Replace You
Join a Rice University Professor and composer for an intimate evening exploring the science and soul of human creativity. Drawing on The Runaway Species, the book our speaker co-authored, we will unpack where our inventiveness actually comes from, how new ideas are born, and why nurturing your own creative instincts has never mattered more than it does right now.
This isn't a lecture about AI doom or hype. It's an honest, grounded conversation about what it means to be a thinking, feeling, making human being — and why that's something no algorithm can replicate. Expect big ideas, a few surprises, and plenty of room for the questions you didn't know you had.
Whether you consider yourself creative or not, you'll leave seeing your own mind differently.
Don't miss your chance to sip, think, and connect with fellow curious adults through your After5Society.
About The Speaker:
Anthony Brandt is a composer and Professor of Composition and Theory at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, and co-author of The Runaway Species: How Human Creativity Remakes the World, written alongside neuroscientist David Eagleman. His work sits at the intersection of music, neuroscience, and the study of human imagination — and he has spent his career asking one of the most fundamental questions we can ask about ourselves: where do new ideas come from? As the founder of Musiqa, Houston's contemporary music ensemble, he has dedicated his life not just to creating, but to bringing creativity into public life.
