About this Event
This course provides a comprehensive guide to implementing and managing copyright compliance within an organisation. This course is aimed at individuals who have completed our Intermediate Certificate (or equivalent) or are existing Copyright/IP Officers Information Governance Managers, copyright leads and similar professionals. The course builds on existing knowledge to ensure participants understand in depth the requirements for implementing and managing a successful program of copyright/IP compliance to help them optimise access to their copyright and IP assets.

The course content includes:
Session 1: Legislative Framework
Legislation Overview: The first part of this course recaps on the legislative framework by briefly deep diving on some key elements such as the origins and justifications for copyright. It invites participants to discuss potential technological threats. The course also examines more broadly the scope of Intellectual Property (IP) Law and other IP rights which might be relevant to participants.
Case Law: The course analyses formative legal cases and explores how copyright law is reflected in the legal process.
Other Legal Issues: Participants will be reminded about other connected information law compliance issues such as data protection, Freedom of Information, Human Rights Act and the Public Sector Information Regulations.
Session 2: Emerging Issues, Policy Development and Implementation
Emerging Issues: Participants will be introduced to emerging issues in copyright, including AI, eBooks and Rights Retention and discuss how these might impact their organisations and the policies they might require.
Policy Essentials: Identify the essential policies required for compliance, who it applies to, how they align with organisational strategic objectives and their practical implications.
Organisational Policy Engagement: Participants work together to consider how to draft a policy implementation plan to ensure organisational compliance.
Session 3: Training Awareness, Knowledge Management and Infringement Response
Training and Awareness Techniques: Explore effective methods to elevate copyright training and awareness across the organisation, including a training needs analysis.
Knowledge Management: Learn strategies to maintain and update data protection knowledge for practitioners and the wider organisation.
Crisis Management: Attendees discuss what constitute an infringement and to learn crisis response and long-term strategies.
Session 4: Accountability, Leadership and Governance
Accountability Assessment: Considers how to assess and ensure accountability within an organisation and how to influence and effect change to make sustainable improvement to organisational compliance.
Copyright/IP Officer Role: This part of the course discusses the role of the Copyright/IP Officer/ including responsibilities and developing a business case.
Governance Framework: Discusses the expectations surrounding Committee Structures and the impact of senior leadership.
Learning Objectives:
- Analyse the origins and the philosophical justifications behind copyright legislation including the balance between protecting creators' rights and public access to creative works.
- Evaluate the impact of the international copyright framework on the shaping and interpretation of copyright legislation in the UK.
- Analyse the role of copyright within the broader Intellectual Property landscape.
- Interpret recent copyright related case law from the UK and the impact on the interpretation of copyright in action in the UK.
- Interpret the impact of broader developments and legal issues on an organisation and their impact on organisational copyright management.
- Construct a relationship map of the key organisational departments/teams and types of people who engage with copyright/IP in an organisation and in what ways.
- Construct a relationship map of the key organisational policies for which copyright/IP will be relevant.
- Align strategic objectives to policy development.
- Construct the headline issues that a copyright/IP Policy might cover.
- Develop a draft implementation plan for a copyright/IP Policy in an organisation.
- Analyse the importance of copyright training and awareness in an organisation.
- Construct a draft training needs analysis for an organisation.
- Define primary and secondary copyright infringement, potential remedies and impact.
- Interrogate the role of a notice and take down policy and procedure.
- Construct an accountability framework for copyright management and compliance across an organisation.
- Construct a plan for an organisation’s requirements for an IP/copyright lead.
- Synthesis next steps to help an organisation develop a suitable governance framework to support engagement with copyright compliance.
