Mental Health First Aid is a FREE skills-based training course that teaches participants about mental health and substance-use issues.
About this Event

This is a FREE virtual class. Participants must be 18 years or older and be a Texas resident.

Mental Health First Aiders are…

Teachers, first responders and veterans. They’re neighbors, parents and friends. They’re people in recovery, and those supporting a loved one. Mental Health First Aiders are anyone who wants to make their community healthier, happier and safer for all.

Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. This evidence-based program has been specifically designed by individuals with lived experience to breakdown stigmas and improve participants knowledge and understanding of mental health and substance use challenges/crises.

This course will cover mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis. MHFA also covers topics related to suicide, substance use, overdose, panic attacks, and following a traumatic event.

Participants will learn the 5-step MHFA action plan ALGEE for both crisis and non-crisis situations. The class will help build participants confidence in their new found ALGEE skills by applying them to different scenarios and group discussions/activities.

*This class requires completion of 2 hours of self-paced online prework before attending the Zoom based 6.5 hour instructor-led portion of the class.*

Steps to take the class:

1. Register for Your MHFA Connect Account: All participants will receive information to access their Connect account.
