WORKSHOPS
Support for Specialist Study Skills Tutors working with complex students – a
new vision (1 hour work context non-Accredited CPD)
Presenter: Diana Higgins
Diana works as a 1:1 Specialist Study Skills Tutor at University of Leeds and is the
ADSHE/PASSHE Regional Co-ordinator for Northern England. Diana is interested in how we
are increasingly working with larger numbers of students with more complex needs
and how this impacts tutors in the sector. The workshop explores how working with
complex students with mental health needs/multiple diagnoses can prove
professionally challenging, as well as potentially impacting our wellbeing and ways of
working. Additionally, it explores what additional support is available for tutors in the
workplace to discuss strategies for working with more complex students and if there
is more that could be done to support tutors in handling stress and challenges when
working with more complex students – for example, a kind of professional
supervision similar to that accessed by counsellors. The workshop is tailored for
tutors working in different HE contexts. It will involve a short presentation outlining
Diana’s initial research into this topic followed by small group work and larger group
discussion. A summary of the workshop discussion will be forwarded to participants
after the event. Diana is also working on an opinion piece for the ADSHE/PASSHE Journal
around support for Study Skills Tutors who work with more complex students, and
with participants’ agreement, would like to include any relevant themes, ideas or
experiences in her article.

AI and our students - Work context workshop on how to support our students
with AI (1 hour work context CPD. This is not an accredited CPD workshop).
Presenter: Diana Higgins
This workshop will involve a short presentation by Diana introducing some of the
common AI tools used by students and identifying some of the key concerns around
use of AI for academic study. She will briefly discuss some anonymised case studies
from her own student caseload. Diana will then lead an interactive discussion which
provides the opportunity to share experiences, ideas and knowledge around AI tools
and as a group we will create a Top Tips poster for tutors when working with
students on AI tools. Participants will receive a handout listing common AI tools
currently used by students in the sector. As a follow-up, all participants will receive a
wordprocessed summary of the workshop discussion.
