BIOGRAPHY
Adonis Puentes was born in 1974 in Artemisa, Cuba, a small town 65 kilometers Southwest of Havana. His father, Valentin Puentes is a well-respected musician and teacher, and by age six Adonis was playing in a children’s guitar ensemble. At 14, Adonis was singing, composing and writing original songs. Puentes has lived on the West Coast of Canada since 1998, but his music continues to be steeped in Cuban music history and culture.
“I have travelled the world singing. My mission in life is to share my music, giving people joy,” he explains. “My compositions seek to capture my poetic journey, my revelations and my maturity as an artist.” Adonis’ music is essentially a warm, revelatory self-portrait. Even if you can’t speak a word of Spanish, you can hear his joy, his love of life, his passion!
Puentes’ award winning 1999 album, Morumba Cubana and 2005 solo debut, Vida were both critically acclaimed. Puentes has been nominated for a Grammy for his work as lead vocalist with Mongorama, a nine piece group based in Los Angeles, directed by celebrated radio host Jose Rizo. He has toured with Irakere veteran Orlando Valle ‘Maraca’ and performed at famed venues such L.A.’s Greek Theatre, Hollywood & Highland, and Lincoln Centre, where he shared the stage with Latin music luminaries Larry Harlow and Ruben Blades before 24,000 fans. He has performed at festivals around the world from TD International Jazz Festivals in Canada, National Council for the Traditional Arts Festivals in the USA, South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, Carnaval de Negros y Blancos in Colombia, to Java Jazz in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Maestro Puentes is a visionary songwriter. His evocative vocals offer a rich and varied narrative in praise of the power of love and delve into every corner of the heart while singing the praises of a life lived fully.
Sabor a Café built upon previous triumphs with a poetic, sensuous song-cycle. Nominated as World Music Album of the Year at the 2014 Juno Awards, his first collection of his own original compositions offers a hypnotic, magical and dream-like musical journey echoing traditional Cuba.
As well as singing his own compositions, Maestro Puentes has deeply studied the works of acclaimed Cuban Troubador Maria Teresa Vera, who shares his roots in Artemisa Province. He brought her oeuvre to international attention in 2013 with his homage album, Veinte Años, in a sensitive collaboration with Maestro Pancho Amat, showcasing the rich traditions of their homeland.
Dicen, Adonis’ 2017 release, his second collection of original songs is a powerful and transcendent exploration of life and love. Writers and poets have always written about life's mysteries and love's power to hurt and heal. Adonis Puentes and his studio team, including Producer Oscar Hernandez (Spanish Harlem Orchestra) created a brilliant, singular vision of life and love. With an impeccable musical framework that sizzles and seduces, Dicen is a juicy dance-floor beauty.
Returning with even greater zest after the pandemic, Maestro Puentes has been honoured to collaborate with the symphonies of Victoria and Vancouver. Joining forces and performing with Sal Ferreras, Adonis’ original compositions have been re-arranged for a full orchestra in an extravaganza entitled “Latin Nights”, to sold out audiences and critical acclaim in both cities.
He recently starred in the Emmy-nominated documentary “How I Got Here” in an episode dedicated to Cuba in which he showcased his musical traditions in a three generational cultural journey together with his father Valentin and his son Jordan.
Set for release in 2026, Adonis’ new album, entitled A Buscar mi Suerte, is a sensuous, profound recording with dramatic arrangements and a crystal clear studio sound, grounded and nourished by the artist’s Cuban roots and worldly experience. A Buscar mi Suerte is a modern, Cuban musical masterpiece, created by bringing together an international team of Latin artists at the top of their game. With valuable support from Cuban-Canadian producer David Labrada Moré, the producer and musical director, who has also contributed keyboard, voice, bass and percussion to the album, arranging and orchestrating every track.
The album, recorded at studios in Canada, Cuba and the USA, is endowed with a strong brass section (on trumpet: Gerardo Enrique Rodriguez, Tommy Lowry and Luis Papo Marquez; on trombone: Bayron Ramos and Yoandy Argudin; on sax: Edd Calle and El Chewi; on flute: Orlando Valle “Maraca” and Rechel Lopez) and outstanding percussion (on drums: Juan Carlos Rojas “El Peje”; on congas: Tomas “El Panga” Ramos), as well as top strings (on guitar: Camilo Velandia; on bass: Roberto “El Chino” Vázquez Ley; on violin: Irvin Frontela) and amazing pianist Alejandro Falcon. These legends of the Latin music scene have worked at the highest level in the genre, with collective experience supporting artists such as Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Camila Cabello and Chucho Valdes, as well as participating in some of the best Latin bands, including Irakere, Los Van Van, Habana de Primera and Orquestra Aragon. The contribution of all this amazing talent, brought together by Maestro Puentes, will take Latin music to a new level. His sensitive and heartfelt lyrics come together like a collection of poetry, a sensuous homage to the Spanish language, underpinning the creative work.
“My name, “Puentes”, means “bridges” in English. Building bridges is my musical mission. I want to build bridges of love with my audience and bridges of understanding and communication between peoples. I am aware of the importance of creating music, illusions, fantasy and happiness, which is a firm responsibility in the times we are living now. Maybe I seem innocent by still writing love songs with beautiful messages, but it is with an awareness that we need art and positive vibrations more than ever. I will never stop singing and expressing the language of love.” #quevivaelamor
