About this Event

Adolescents often make the headlines, and it's rarely good news. According to the latest media reports, today's adolescents are in the midst of a mental health crisis, and it's all because of their phones. But how much of it is actually true? This talk will unpack the science behind the headlines, breaking down the latest psychological research about this turbulent period of life. There is some cause for concern - adolescence has always been a period of risk, and phones can certainly add to the problem. But there are reasons to be hopeful too. Teenagers today are more resilient that we give them credit for, and we should celebrate that too.

Dr Lucy Foulkes is an academic psychologist at the University of Oxford. She holds a Prudence Trust Research Fellowship and a NIHR Senior Research Fellowship. Her group researches mental health and social development in adolescence, with a particular focus on the possible negative consequences of increased public mental health awareness and school-based mental health interventions. Prior to Oxford, she completed her PhD and postdoc at UCL and moved on to a lectureship at University of York. She has written two books: What Mental Illness Really Is (…and what it isn’t) and Coming Of Age: How Adolescence Shapes Us, both published by Penguin Random House. Her work has been featured in national and international media outlets including The Guardian, The Times, New Scientist, BBC Radio 4, BBC Newsnight and The New York Times.
