Location: Colleen, based in New York state, will be presenting via Zoom. Attendees may join via Zoom from their home/workplace, or join the Everett OT/PT Team at the Community Resource Center in Everett, WA to watch as a group (and network with colleagues).
Course Description
Children face many challenges today. These challenges can affect all aspects of a child's life including learning and gross/fine motor development. Understanding the mind-body connection and the relationship between learning and movement is crucial for improving a child's school performance and functional abilities. Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), self-regulation, sensory processing, and stress-related disorders face even greater challenges. An understanding of the specific brain differences with these disorders and their implications is essential for successful classroom and therapy strategies.
Learning Objectives
- Describe basic brain anatomy and function.
- Summarize the challenges children face today.
- Summarize the importance of play and movement on development and learning.
- Define ADHD, the brain differences and its implications.
- Learn strategies to promote improved self-regulation.
- Set up movement breaks, cerebellar activities, breathing activities, effective strategies, and classroom modifications.
Speaker
Colleen Williams, PT, is a licensed physical therapist with over 25 years experience in the area of pediatrics working in early intervention, preschools, and with children from kindergarten to high school. Ms. Williams' expertise lies in pediatric therapy as it relates to brain function, the importance of movement and mindful activities. She has developed an extensive knowledge base in the many aspects of the brain and how brain function affects health, well-being, movement, and learning in the neurotypical and atypical childhood population with an emphasis on ADHD, autism, and sensory processing disorders.
Continuing Education
Certificates of Completion (0.6 CEUs or 6 Contact Hours) will be provided by the EPS Special Education PTSA & EPS OT/PT Deptpartment upon completion of the course and course evaluation.
Washington Clock Hours (6) will be available for purchase through Puget Sound Education Service District/pdEnroller.
