The Department of Maltese in the Faculty of Arts is hosting a public lecture by Prof. Yousef Abu Amrieh from the University of Jordan on "Adapting Pierre Mejlak’s “The Pomegranate House" on Thursday 14th November 2024 from 12.00pm to 1.30pm in Room GW256 of the University of Malta campus in Tal-Qroqq, Msida.
Prof. Abu Amrieh: "In this lecture, I will highlight how literary texts are adapted and appropriated by filmmakers, playwrights and even by writers. Certainly, canonical texts like Shakespeare’s plays and Dickens’s novels are among the most frequently recycled ones since they are not protected, strictly speaking, by copyright laws. Transforming a text into a film usually involves a process of re-writing and reinterpreting the original text for sociopolitical and cultural purposes. Drawing on Federico Chini and Manuel Xuereb’s adaptation of Pierre Mejlak’s short story “The Pomegranate House,” I will highlight the differences between the original text and the film in the plot, some characters and settings in an attempt to explain how these changes have aesthetic and thematic ends."
Yousef Abu Amrieh is a professor of contemporary Arab diasporic literature at the University of Jordan. His first monograph, The Arab Atlantic is based on his PhD thesis which he completed in 2011 at the University of Manchester. Since then, Prof. Abu Amrieh published several articles that explore a wide range of themes in the works of Arab writers in diaspora. In addition, Prof. Abu Amrieh frequently publishes articles on Arab adaptations and appropriation of Shakespeare. Prof. Abu Amrieh is the founder of CADLS, an international research group on contemporary Arab diasporic literature. Prof. Abu Amrieh was included in the Stanford Elsevier Top Researchers List of the world’s best researchers for the year 2024.
