Dive into a full-body improvisational practice that uses sound, movement, and language to play, imagine, and create the unknown!
About this Event

The class is a sliding scale donation, $5-$40. I've listed $5 tickets here as a reservation fee - especially if you've never taken an Action Theater class before, feel free to come and try it out! If afterwards, you want to give more, you're welcome to, or you can stick with $5 :)

Welcome!! This workshop will be held in Chez Bushwick at the Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation in Brooklyn.

What is Action Theater? It can be hard to talk about, but easy to fall into. That being said, I would call Action Theater a training. It trains us how to listen deeper, both to ourselves and to others. Through improvisation, it teaches us how to take whatever our bodies, our partners, or the world throws at us and play with it as though it were the perfect gift. In the container of Action Theater, we play with all energies, all states of being as textures. We will improvise using our bodies in movement, in sound, and in language - learn how these ways of improvising and expressing can be used simultaneously and/or in dialogue with each other. We are always creating, always composing, always absurd. Let’s put an awareness to it.

A note: “Sound” is not to be confused with “music.” Action Theater looks at all action, all sound as textural. There is no hierarchy of textures - pretty is not more valuable than ugly, soft is no less fundamental that loud. We strip our societal relationships with these textures to experience them as TOOLS to be PLAYED with, and in the play, we are never owned by them.

And me: I’m a recently certified Action Theater teacher who was introduced to the practice in 2018 at Emerson College and instantly fell in love. I’ve studied and played in the world of Theater for most of my life, but love to be multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary. I love to sing, dance, speak, draw, photograph, cook, blah blah blah blah blah. Improvisation is my life-blood, it’s my way through this life. While I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy performing rehearsed pieces, there is something about standing on the edge of the unknown…and stepping forward. Dancing, despite it all.
