About this Event

Beginner Acrylic Painting Workshop (No Experience Needed)

Acrylic is the best “first painting” medium: it’s forgiving, fast-drying, and incredibly versatile. In this workshop, you’ll learn the core moves that make acrylic feel easy—then you’ll use them to paint a finished piece in one session.

No experience needed. This is structured, fun, and very “you can do this.”

Part 1 — Acrylic Foundations (where confidence starts)

You’ll learn:

  • How acrylic paint behaves (thin vs thick, water control, drying time)
  • Basic brush handling (edges, pressure, strokes)
  • Simple color mixing (warm/cool, value, and a quick mixing method you can repeat)
  • How to keep paintings clean (avoid muddy color)

Part 2 — Skill Studies (fast mini-exercises)

We’ll do quick guided studies to understand:

  • Blending (smooth transitions without overworking)
  • Value (light/dark shapes that make a painting “read”)
  • Texture (dry brush, scumble, simple palette-knife effects if available)
  • Depth (foreground/background, contrast, and clarity)

Part 3 — Paint a Finished Piece (guided, step-by-step)

You’ll choose a beginner-friendly subject (usually one of these):

  • A simple landscape
  • A still life
  • A modern abstract / color-block composition

You’ll leave with a finished painting and a repeatable process.

What’s included
  • Canvas or painting surface
  • Acrylic paints + palettes
  • Brushes + water cups + paper towels
  • Apron + all setup/cleanup
  • Step-by-step demos + individual help

Good to know
  • Acrylic dries quickly—perfect for learning and finishing in one session.
  • Wear clothes you’re okay getting a little paint on (we’ll have aprons too).

Who is Yahya?

Trained as a working artist, Yahya taught graduate-level students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before launching his own art school.
