About this Event
Academic Literacies for All A Whole-Institution Adoption of Student Development
Dr Andrew Struan, Writing and Study Skills Coordinator, Learning Enhancement & Academic Development Service, University of Glasgow

Writing in 2006, Wingate noted that, in her view, it would be unlikely that any research-intensive, British university would devote the resources and time to providing academic literacies development for all students (Wingate, 2006). The radical shifts and changes within the British Higher Education sector since 2006, alongside the developments in technology and (active) blended learning, has meant that Wingate’s claim is, thankfully, no longer true (Boyle, Ramsay and Struan, 2019; Struan, 2021).

This paper will look at the ways in which the University of Glasgow has adopted an academic literacies for all approach to student development. The paper will focus on the Academic Writing Skills Programme (AWSP) as an exemplar of academic literacies development for all students. Compulsory for all of Glasgow’s yearly intake of 16,000 undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, AWSP is a unique example of learning development at scale.

The paper will focus on the pedagogical rationale and justification behind the Programme and will discuss the real-life practicalities of running a course at such scale.
