Acoustic improvisations touching on jazz, classical, noise and experimental music.-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sakina Abdou is a rising star of free improvisation. Her saxophone playing moves between velvety lines and raw abstraction, ‘evoking Lee Konitz as much as Peter Brötzmann’, according to critic Peter Margasak. At the invitation of Relative Pitch Records she formed a trio with Marta Warelis on (prepared) piano and Toma Gouband, who combines percussion instruments with objects, stones and branches.
Within a highly acoustic sound and chamber music approach, the ear can discover strong references to jazz, minimalism, classical and noise music. The powerfully evocative playing asserts a sense of accomplished writing and construction while cultivating a lively, spontaneous and organic sound. Toma Gouband’s percussion can act as the pulse and as a constellation for the intense interactions of Abdou and Warelis. The trio’s first album Hammer, Roll and Leaf appeared on the New York-based label Relative Pitch.
